A world in which people understand what it means to be a global citizen and who are fully empowered and equipped to act for the common good.
To offer education, training and leadership programs that inspire people to enact individual and collective initiatives that make a difference;
To strengthen the voice of indigenous wisdom as a vital learning component to transformative actions;
To generate more opportunities for multicultural and intergenerational dialogue;
To increase economic opportunities for Bali through culturally-sustainable programs and cultural learning.
Bali Institute for Global Renewal (BIGR) is the first world learning center that engages multicultural leadership and facilitation training, deep dialogue, indigenous wisdom, global consciousness, intergenerational activism and other action-oriented skills and training that empowers individuals, groups and organizations in their quest to make a difference in the world. BIGR includes a consortium of international organizations, corporations, NGOs, universities, thought leaders and consultants who are invested in advancing new forms of leadership training, intergenerational collaboration, nonviolent conflict resolution and social activism as part of a worldview that promotes a sustainable, humane and culturally-diverse life for all.
BIGR will be offering an array of programs created and produced by the Institute as well as education and trainings offered by its partners.
The QUEST FOR GLOBAL HEALING Conferences were first conceived from a short vacation that founder Marcia Jaffe took to Bali for rest and rejuvenation after producing a large conference for the Institute for Noetic Sciences in 2003. (Read more about Marcia's story here) The Bali Institute for Global Renewal emerged from the two conference programs developed and produced in Ubud, Bali in 2004 and 2006. The third gathering, held in August of 2007, was developed from the learning that emerged from the first two gatherings, focused more on cross-cultural leadership training and dialogue emphasizing new forms of activism and social transformation. In less than four years, these three global gatherings have brought together more than 1,300 people from more than 40 countries to explore new roles individuals can play in addressing such important issues as poverty, human rights, sustainable development, environment concerns, nonviolent conflict resolution, and numerous other challenges.
Individuals attending were drawn to these gatherings by their own personal beliefs that they can make a difference in the world, and to identify action steps to become more engaged in an area of global social change that they personally feel passionate about. Participant countries included China, Russia, Thailand, Laos, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Peru, Canada, Norway, Tunisia, France, Germany, Greece, Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, United States, and many more. Although culture and languages were different, the common bond of wanting to be in Bali, and to be with other concerned global citizens ready to become more involved in the world were major gatherings.
I attended the 2006 conference with my 17 year old daughter (Lyla Johston -pictured in the sidebar above) and our lives were changed forever. I watched her turn from being a fierce warrior, on the attack, knowing in her heart that Humanity's demise was only a matter of time TO a young person coming to terms with what she is FOR more than what she is AGAINST... As a mother who has wept to hear that when her child looks forward she can see only doom - I can hardly express what this shift has meant to me personally ...I believe the Global Healing Conference in Bali was integral in making this happen. My daughter herself says that it has been the greatest event of her life!

The island and culture of Bali serves as the integral component of these programs. The foundation of this work has been based on the belief that Bali, unlike any other cultural environment in the world, will grow to be the hub for important dialogues, action-oriented multicultural/intergenerational experiences, and transformative social change.
Bali is one of the most peaceful, beautiful places on earth. It’s an ideal location for people from every part of the planet to explore new roles they can play in addressing major global issues. This rich culture has much to share with citizens of our shared planet about learning to heal, forgive and live harmoniously with one another and our beloved earth. Balinese rituals and arts all play a role in this new kind of learning. Delegates attending our sessions will encounter the unusual way Balinese ceremony and performance converge with deepening dialogue and action-orient planning. All of the BIGR programs incorporate Balinese experiences, both linear and non-linear, into the transformative curriculum.
In addition to the above highlights, the three programs held in Ubud brought an estimated $1,000,000 into Ubud via hotels, food, gift purchases, transportation, tips, donations and cultural activities. Hundreds of attendees have also continued to donate to personal and collective Balinese causes and educational funds. In addition, many friendships were formed between the Balinese and the attendees, which continue to help Bali in ways that are immeasurable but worth an enormous amount to local families and banjars in Bali.
